As far as if it is a good idea or not only you can as the owner can decide that. This isnt the easiest job to do, but this video will give you an idea what is in store for you.I would start by swapping all 8 coils and plugs and probably changing the valve cover gasket as well as those are known to go bad in the 2000-2003 LS.There is the engine wiring harness, the computer, many connections and placement fittings you would have to contend with.
Check if the Crown Vic even had the 5.8L as an option. If so, it may be possible with minor modifications, but may be very time-consuming, whereas another 5.0L is just a straight swap-much easier. By the way, Im not sure your fluid-draining storage idea is very advisable. An old mechanic once told me never leave the coolant system dry-it leads to rust, scale and corrosion, and dried seals. He even kept his engines that were removed and.stored on the floor topped up with anti-freeze- said he never had a problem with corrosion build-up or dried seals. There was a recall (information below) for the 4.6 for the intake-the overheating and lack of power means you should at least have compression checked and go from there-you may have bad head gaskets or worse. Claims not available, but wont supply PN or share info for me to search for replacement. Its my understanding this FI system was the same for 00-03 Lincoln LS, T-Bird and Jaguar S-Type.
